on being an artist

Even the simplest things are complicated; you can never look at something and look away quickly, you think about everything.  Or is this part hyper-analytical, not necessarily creative.  You are going to be broke, repeatedly, unless you are lucky enough to make some kind of art that people want to buy.  It has less to do with artistic vision than economics.  You might take strange drugs to bridge this gap, of how you see and how you are seen, acknowledged, and compensated.  It feels less like a gift when no one else sees it this way.   But then even if you’re really broke, you can still paint on scrap paper and be revived, or at least comforted, that you took a paper grocery bag and made a giant mask.  And then you can wear this mask around the RV park and wig out the neighbors.
