I’ve decided to post a poem I wrote about the fires in Colorado, north and south now. Here’s my poem:
all day all night
two weeks of trees burning,
animals losing their dens, nests
newly homeless families
lonely people too
look up at the smoke
push a lead sadness back in
yes, weary from
raw eyeballs and
itchy thin breath.
saying prayers for fire fighters
I am scared and thankful for you
I am trying out rain dances, making them up but urgently.
Officially, lightning caused this fire
really humans did
we cooked our mother
until there was not enough water left in June
to stop the summer lighting from spreading
All names for charred parts of Earth.
Longing a little
for a bigger fire than this. These.
To burn away our brutal mistakes,
millions of greedy desires.
Let someone else start over
someone wiser, less demanding.
