[author’s note: this writing comes directly from my MFA creative thesis]
1. The sides of certain laying-down people can be a home.
2. The place where the books end up. And the boxes of paper, photos, postcards. I could build a home out of the OED and a few boxes of old paper.
3. In America there are people living in cars. The cars are their homes. It can be their cars or other people’s cars, in back yards and parking lots and empty fields all over America. Cars are Important here, we have more than any other country, and a lot of shitty old ones are still in circulation somehow. So when people lose their stationary homes, they can cross over to mobile ones before their home becomes a lack of manufactured walls altogether. But, when you live in your car, you literally do not have a pot to piss in, you are the center of this old, sad saying. I have only lived in my car once and not for very long. The worst part was having to decide every night if it was safe to sleep with the back door open, thus allowing my body enough space to lie comfortably, or if the door must stay shut and locked. In which case I woke up horribly kinked.
