    It’s not the same as being there, but you might enjoy the reflections of a long-time literary resident of the area, Henry Miller. He first arrived in Big Sur in the mid-1940s after taking a long auto trip from NYC (captured wonderfully in “The Air-Conditioned Nightmare”). He wrote “Big Sur and the Oranges of Hieronymous Bosch” there in the mid-1950s. It has one of my favorite Miller quotations, a moral to himself after he did a mildly foolish thing while playing a game of chess against a much more expert player: “And the moral is — Don’t be gay when you’re full of shit.” I got Erica Jong to inscribe that line in her book about Miller some years ago. She seemed tickled by the sentiment.
