forest fires in Boulder County

the smoke was thick and yellow

Driving south to Boulder on Friday, I could see smoke from thirty miles away.  I got out of the car to take a few photos and feel very sad.  The smoke was more yellow and heavy than it looks here.  Like there was a lot of pine sap burning.  Just standing outside of the car for a few minutes got my asthma riled up & I was coughing for the rest of the drive to town.

The fire from another angle:

around 240 homes were evacuated

…and from another direction (the first two photos were taken on the Front Range, I forget the name of the road, looking south directly at the fire. The one below is from more central Boulder, looking west towards the mountains).

at the Sawhill Wildllife Preserve, off 75th Street

As of this posting, I don’t know if the fire (fires? Some lady at a bookstore later in the day, when the smoke was still very strong in the air, said there were two fires burning) is under control.  It’s early March; way too early for naturally occurring forest fires.  There is growing worry in the area there’s an arsonist behind all this destruction.

Such a beautiful view of the Sawhill Wildlife Preserve, juxtaposed with an ugly sight (the fire). . .
